Following Jody Wilson-Raybould’s testimony, yesterday, I had a few suggestions on how we move forward.

Below are those initial suggestions…

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should:

  • confirm mistakes have been made
  • acknowledge the problems within the Prime Minister’s Office by requesting the resignations of Mathieu Bouchard and Katie Telford
  • begin the process of decentralizing the power of the Prime Minister’s Office
  • ask Jody Wilson-Raybould to resume her role as Attorney General and Minister of Justice

I am aware that the last suggestion does assume Jody Wilson-Raybould would like to return and continue in these roles.

Today, I have a few more suggestions on how we move forward, in addition to the suggestions listed above…

The Attorney General of Canada and the Minister of Justice should be separated as quickly as possible, via legislation.

FYI In the United Kingdom, the office of the Attorney General is a non-cabinet post, READ: separate from the cabinet position of Minister of Justice.

Once the positions are separated, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is free to appoint Jody Wilson-Raybould as Attorney General and David Lametti as Minister of Justice.

The duties of each position have overlapped—and will likely continue to overlap—however, the Attorney General should be independent, i.e. Auditor General, Parliamentary Budget Officer, etc. to avoid further conflicts of interest.
