If elected, Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada will de-fund Planned Parenthood.

What is Planned Parenthood?

Planned Parenthood is a leading sexual and reproductive health care advocate and provider.

Planned Parenthood improves health, saves lives, empowers women, and combats poverty.

Planned Parenthood provides services that include contraceptives, emergency contraception, screening for breast, cervical and testicular cancers, pregnancy testing and pregnancy options counselling, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, comprehensive sexuality education, menopause treatments, vasectomies, tubal ligations, abortion, etc.

What will happen if Planned Parenthood is de-funded?

Planned Parenthood keeps women and men healthy.

When women and men have access to family planning, it leads to healthier outcomes for mother, father and child.

When pregnancies are planned, women are more likely to seek prenatal care — improving their own health and the health of their children. In fact, access to family planning is directly linked to declines in maternal and infant mortality rates.

Without Planned Parenthood more women will experience unintended pregnancies.

Without Planned Parenthood more women and men will face potentially life-threatening sexually transmitted diseases — which could have been prevented with sex education.

Planned Parenthood saves women and men’s lives through cancer screening, immunization, etc.

Why does Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada plan to de-fund Planned Parenthood?

The Harper government’s decision to de-fund Planned Parenthood has been influenced by anti-abortion supporters from both religious and pro-life movements — rather than the quality of the Planned Parenthood proposal for funding.

Update
Bev Oda issued a statement Thursday, April 21, 2011 suggesting that if Planned Parenthood applied for funding and did not request cash for abortions, it would receive money:

“If Planned Parenthood submits an application that falls within
the government’s parameters for the G8 Muskoka Initiative,
     there will be funding.”

At this time, the Harper government’s plan to de-fund Planned Parenthood impacts its international efforts — with a majority, Stephen Harper will take aim at Canadian women’s reproductive rights and Canadian women’s reproductive health and choices.
