THE NDP NEVER DID EXPLAIN…

WHAT IS WRONG W/ RANKED BALLOT?!

In case you forgot, the House of Commons Special Committee on Electoral Reform, AKA ERRE, was an all-party Parliamentary committee convened and empowered to “conduct a study of viable alternate voting systems to replace the first-past-the-post system”, as well as to examine mandatory voting and online voting, all with an eye to improving the legitimacy, integrity, and inclusiveness of Canada’s voting system, and the extent to which it could facilitate local representation and citizen engagement.

*cue the self-interest*

That’s right, the CPC demanded a referendum, regardless.

At some point, the NDP and the GPC sided w/ the CPC… and, demanded a referendum, too.

Unfortunately, a clear preference for a new electoral system—let alone a consensus—never emerged.

And, w/o a clear preference—or a clear question—a referendum would not be in Canada’s interest.

*cue the faux outrage*

FYI The NDP used Ranked Ballot to decide its 2017 leadership race… so what is wrong w/ it?

Short answer: Nothing is wrong w/ it.

But, we don’t hear that from the NDP, or the GPC…

Anyway, an interesting footnote to all this?

In 2018 and 2019, there were provincial referendums held in BC and in PEI on Electoral Reform…

*GASP*

That’s right, a referendum on electoral reform was held in BC in 2018—BC’s third referendum on electoral reform since 2005—and 61.3% voted to keep the existing FPTP system and rejected ANY proportional representation (PR) system.

And, a referendum on electoral reform was held in PEI in 2019… 51.74% voted to keep the existing FPTP system and rejected ANY proportional representation (PR) system.

But you don’t hear Jagmeet Singh, or Elizabeth May talking about this at campaign stops… do you?

I WONDER WHY!
