Plains Midstream Canada is involved in another oil spill in the province of Alberta.
Plains Midstream Canada is the same company that saw a 28,000-barrel leak last year from the Rainbow Pipeline. [See Required Reading below.]
- An estimated 1,000 to 3,000 barrels of leaked oil, stretches along the Red Deer River, presumably from Jackson Creek.
- The oil leak is approximately 75 kilometres upstream, from Red Deer — the third largest city in the province of Alberta.
- Residents along the swollen banks of Red Deer River have already reported the stench of oil, as well as sightings of injured and dead wildlife.
- Containment efforts are underway at Glennifer Lake by Dickson Dam, a reservoir for the water supply for Red Deer, Alberta.
- There is a concern about the future quality of drinking water with the oil in the Red Deer River and the fact that the river is moving very quickly right now because of the recent rains and Spring thaw.
